The Museum Complex

Mather House (circa 1840-1860): located at 115 Prospect Street, Port Jefferson was the home of the Mather family, 19th century Port Jefferson shipbuilders and John T. Mather. The bequest left by John T. Mather allowed for the building of the Community Hospital that is named for him (the current Mather Hospital/Northwell Health). The Mather House is the headquarters of the Historical Society of Greater Port Jefferson.

The Spinney Clock Building: opened in the spring of 2002 and houses the Spinney Clock Collection. This collection includes over 250 antique clocks from the collection of Ross and Tex Spinney.

Tool Shed: houses a collection of Port Jefferson shipbuilding and carpentry tools.

Collins’ Carriage House: features two Port Jefferson-built 1875 Baldwin Coles Bentley Carriages and other carriage-related artifacts.

Dr. R. Sherman Mills Country Shops: this outbuilding contains a re-creation of a country store, barber shop, butcher shop and post office.

Marine Barn and Sail Loft: this area contains a collection of Port Jefferson shipbuilding and sail making artifacts, including a full-sized harbor diorama (circa 1900).

Farm Shed: the shed houses a collection of antique farm tools, including corn planters and hand plows.

Frank Child Chair Repair Shop: this building contains a replica of longtime society member Frank Child’s chair repair and caning studio.

Consignment Shop/Craft House :(originally the Deddio House (circa 1840); moved from its original location in downtown Port Jefferson). The main floor, which is open seasonally, sells an eclectic collection of consignment items. The lower level is furnished as a period kitchen.

Thomas Jefferson Perennial Garden: located to the right of the Consignment Shop, is maintained by the Suwassett Garden Club.

Wayne Helmer Herb Garden: located behind the Mather House, is maintained by the Kunz Family Nursery.
